The first Italian public entity to hold a design competition is the Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato, which is managing the stages of the procedure thanks to our PRO-Q platform.
The design competitionconcerns the project for the redevelopment and recovery of the real estate complex in Via Principe Umberto in Rome, the historic headquarters of Italy’s first State Mint. More than thirty architectural firms-both Italian and foreign-applied for the first phase of the competition, including such illustrious names as Rafael Moneo and Eduardo Souto De Moura, winners of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, Rudy Ricciotti and Vázquez Consuegra.
The contest – online on our PRO-Q platform – will have a pre-selection open to all contestants in open form and a subsequent selection phase of up to 10 contestants.
The Treasury is the commissioner of this major restoration project, for which 23,500,000 euros, net of VAT, including safety charges, plus 4,800,000 euros have already been allocated for the setting up of exhibition spaces. The goal is to turn the building into a cultural hub for the city, open to the public and schools.
The directions of the project, include the preservation of the spaces used for the School of the Art of Medal and the design of a new space to be used as a “Single Museum Center of Coins, Coins and Coins Cards,” which will collect works and memorabilia currently stored in other locations.
There will also be museum areas that will house temporary exhibition spaces open to the public, with food outlets and Poligrafico outlets, a library with materials from the State Library and Historical Archives, and spaces for educational activities, workshops, offices, a conference center and guest quarters.
The prizes up for grabs for the top three finishers are cash prizes that will reward the design part only:
to the 1st place winner: 200,000.00 euros
to the 2nd place winner: 70,000.00 euros
to the 3rd place winner: 30,000.00 euros
Treasury reserves the right to award the achievement work to the first-place winner.
